The name Furbelow is quite apt for the species as a furbelow is a gathered strip or pleated border of a skirt or petticoat, or a flounce or ruffle. The name best describes the large wavy frills above the holdfast of the species.

This seaweed can be found at many sites all over Devon and Cornwall Peninsula. Images here were taken at Marazion, near Penzance, Cornwall; Porth Nanven, St. Just, Cornwall; and Wembury Point, South Devon.

The small brown algae Chilionema hispanicum can sometimes be found growing as an epiphyte on Saccorhiza polyschides.

Scientific and European Names:
Saccorhiza polyschides, Furbelows, Sea Furbelows, Furbellows, Sea Furbellows, Sea Hedgehog, Kelp, Sackwurzeltang, Knolwier, Laminaire a Bulbe, Laminaria bulbosa.

The main objective of this website is in furthering environmental awareness and education through the medium of photography. To increase awareness and access to the wildlife of the region and help
people find and identify it. Sometimes the difference between species is obvious but many species can only be determined by observing microscopic characteristics that are specific to any one species.
