The fir cone above was found on the high tide mark at Trenow Cove, near Perranuthnoe, Cornwall. 22.01.16.

Firs cones are not true Sea Beans or seeds, fir cones often fall into streams and rivers and enter the sea and wash-up on beaches, especially on the strandline, the high tide mark. Fir cones may also wash-up on beaches from the east coast of the United States of America and Canada, but it is difficult to tell local fir cones from those that cross the Atlantic as so many species of conifers are grown in the UK, in silvaculture and as ornamental / amenity trees.

The main objective of this website is in furthering environmental awareness and education through the medium of photography. To increase awareness and access to the wildlife of the region and help
people find and identify it. Sometimes the difference between species is obvious but many species can only be determined by observing microscopic characteristics that are specific to any one species.
