The 'hairy' sponge featured here was found under a slipway in Newlyn Harbour. It was found to occur on the vertical sides of concrete supports under the slipway and on barnacles on the ceiling.

A good account of Eurypon major can be found at the Marine Species Identification Portal.

Images of this species were taken on a low water spring at Newlyn Harbour, Newlyn, Cornwall. 28.02.13 and 12.03.13.

The main objective of this website is in furthering environmental awareness and education through the medium of photography. To increase awareness and access to the wildlife of the region and help
people find and identify it. Sometimes the difference between species is obvious but many species can only be determined by observing microscopic characteristics that are specific to any one species.
