The Smooth cockle is a large species of cockle. It can be distinguished from the Common Cockle by its smooth shell with 40 low flattened ribs. This cockle burrows quite deeply into sand and mud so only shells are seen washed up on the high tide mark. Fairly common on both coasts, a common find at both Par and Porthpean Beaches.

Photographed in the St. Austell Bay area at Par Beach near St. Blazey and Lower Porthpean Beach near St. Austell.

Scientific and European Names:
Laevicardium crassum, Smooth cockle, Noorse hartschelp, Bucarde.

The main objective of this website is in furthering environmental awareness and education through the medium of photography. To increase awareness and access to the wildlife of the region and help
people find and identify it. Sometimes the difference between species is obvious but many species can only be determined by observing microscopic characteristics that are specific to any one species.
