Images were taken at Constantine Beach, North Cornwall. 10.12.09. Images are of a male pup, 3-5 weeks old, and 17kg in weight. Pup was first sighted by author and his partner coming out of the water during a storm. Pup headed up the beach straight towards us. The pup was injured so the emergency services were phoned and the pup was duly rescued and received by the RSPCA West Hatch Wildlife Centre, where it was treated, and a few months later released back into Cornish Waters. A happy ending for such a beautiful creature.

Sadly not all pups make it. The pup below was found alive at Praa Sands but despite being cared for, didn't make it and died minutes before someone from the Cornwall Marine Strandings Network arrived at the scene.

The pup above was found at Praa Sands, near Helston, Cornwall. 21.01.16. The fishing net in the image has nothing to do with the plight of the seal, the net was being used to protect the animal from wind and the cold, and used as a temporary stretcher. A coat was also used to try and warm the animal as it was in a bad way and not moving much.

Scientific and European Names:
Halichoerus grypus, Atlantic grey seal, Kegelrob, Grijze zeehond, Phoque gris, Foca de gris, Foca grigia.

The main objective of this website is in furthering environmental awareness and education through the medium of photography. To increase awareness and access to the wildlife of the region and help
people find and identify it. Sometimes the difference between species is obvious but many species can only be determined by observing microscopic characteristics that are specific to any one species.
