Knopper Gall
Andricus quercuscalicis
- gall developing on acorn 1
This is not a sea bean or even a seed, but a gall of a seed, the acorn. The gall, Knopper Gall is caused by the wasp Andricus quercuscalicis, which inoculates acorns of oak trees with its eggs. The galls become detached from the acorns or fall with the acorns into rivers and streams where they are brought to the sea and washed-up on beaches.
Specimen above found on the strandline at Gwithian, Cornwall. 10.03.16.
