A common mollusc on rocky shores across the south-west, can be found under stones, among weed and in rockpools.
Whilst this species is very common, it can be subject to over collection for food; this not only places the species at risk at certain locations but by taking away grazers, weed growth will greatly increase and habitats can change significantly. Care should also be taken when collecting any mollusc for food and it should be done well away from potential sources of pollution.
Images of species taken at Batten Beach, Plymouth, Devon, 13.01.06; at Spit Point, Par, near St. Austell, Cornwall, 04.04.10; at Chyandour Rocks, Penzance, Cornwall, 25.09.11; and at many other locations.
Scientific and European Names: Littorina littorea, Common periwinkle, Edible winkle, Gemeine strandschnecke, Gewone alikruik, Bigorneau, Bigaro, Littorina comune.
