The male specimen above was found in a scrape sample taken from a pontoon at Queen Anne's Battery Marina, Plymouth, Devon, during the MBA Bioblitz, 14.10.16. The specimen was found near to the site where the species was originally discovered by Dr. John Bishop at the Marine Biological Association at Plymouth. The specimen above has been kindly verified by Dr. Graham Bird.

Specimen found on a marina pontoon at Falmouth, Cornwall, by Dr. Paul Gainey, October 2014.

I believe this is the first confirmed Cornish record of the species, which was originally named from material collected at Plymouth, Devon, and from a boat called Wombat, that was birthed at a Plymouth marina.

The female here was kindly determined by Dr. Graham Bird, who stated, pereonites 1-3 together shorter than broad), pleonite setation sparse and 4- segments in uropod. The males have the very arcuate cheliped dactylus.

I very rarely use images taken by others on this website, but here all images of the female were taken by and are © Dr. Paul Gainey. They are being used with permission and are here to display what is quite a recently described species of tanaid, which has been found in Cornwall. Images of the male are © David Fenwick, the author of this website.

The main objective of this website is in furthering environmental awareness and education through the medium of photography. To increase awareness and access to the wildlife of the region and help
people find and identify it. Sometimes the difference between species is obvious but many species can only be determined by observing microscopic characteristics that are specific to any one species.
