I'm very grateful to the finder Sabine Springer to be able to use her images of this non-native species. It's an unusual and a fantastic find having drifted all the way across the Atlantic. The species was found on the side of a Heineken crate that was washed-up on the Doorus Peninsula, Kinvara, Co. Galway, Ireland. Sadly a lot of plastic is discarded too quickly and ends up in landfill. Plastic plays an important role in transferring species across the Atlantic and it is highly import we identify these species as some of these species could pose an ecological threat as our seas warm as a result of global warming.
On seeing the image of this serpulid worm I immediately sent the image to the well known serpulid expert at Naturalis, Harry ten Hove. It was a complete but nice coincidence that Harry authored this Gulf of Mexico / Caribbean species in 1975. The species will be added to the Irish list, but of course this species could also turn up on flotsam around the UK, which is why it is here on APHOTOMARINE.
The identification of this species is a fantastic example of networking and we, myself, Decland Quigley and Sabine Springer are incredibly grateful to Harry ten Hove for his help in confirming the species.
